Totally a newbie needs direction!

fridaysmum
Hi All

Got my first digital camera about a month ago & was directed to GIMP
yesterday, so now have it on the computer.

What's the best way to start learning GIMP..I know NOTHING!

The "help" menus are not functioning. What can I do?

If I heavily crop a photo, does that mean I lose quality if I zoom it
up to print (eg 8x10)? Or is there a technique to help with that?

Hope to get answers & THANKS!

Friday

The help files are a seperate download.  You can find them on the
downloads page of http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net.  There are also
some useful tutorials on the main site: http://www.gimp.org

As for "upscaling" an image, chances are it'll be pixelated.  I'm 100%
positive GIMP is pixel-based.  (Although it would be awesome to see a
vector-based manipulation program one day, which would eliminate
pixelation altogether.)

There's a great book called "Grokking the GIMP" by Carey Bunks that you
can buy or read online at http://gimp-savvy.com/

The manual at http://www.gimp.org/docs/ is also very good.

They are a separate download from http://docs.gimp.org/. For some
reason, the GIMP website doesn't provide a link to that subdomain (that
I could find), so it's a bit tricky to uncover. I had to resort to a
google search just now to locate it. There's actually a windows
installer, which is probably your easiest option:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-win/gimp-help-2-0.7-setup.zip?download

Alternatively you might prefer to just set your web browser to view the
files over the internet in preferences, if you are connected often.

You should have an idea in your mind how large you want the photographs
to be before you take them, that way you can choose to capture them at a
suitable resolution. When you come to handle them in an app like the
GIMP, you can shrink them with little or no loss in quality because you
already have enough data to work with, but when you're enlarging the
photos beyond the resolution you shot them at, you don't have enough
data and the GIMP has to fill in the blanks, so to speak, with new
pixels. This process will always result in loss of quality. The larger
you expand the photo, the more holes you have to fill and the worse the
quality becomes.

It's a bit like an artist restoring an old painting. If it has a small
scratch then he can accurately restore it by examining the surrounding
paint and mixing his paint accordingly, but when a larger chunk of the
painting is missing, it becomes much harder for him to do this.

As a newbie myself, as of an hour ago, I'd like to tag onto this
thread.

I need help with help.  I got the help file and unzipped it but when
I try to use it, I still get the error message.  Does it need to be
installed?  I didn't see an installer in the folder.

Hi David,

My sympathies,  I have *never* managed to get the help files to work. I now have them in a short cut in Quick Launch.

Well you had more patience than I did with that white screen, black
forground thing. I didn't get as far as you & perhaps tomorrow, I'll
go back to it. The whole thing is frustrating.

The "help" turns out to be the same manual that is online only it's
saved to your computer so you don't have to be online to go to it. I
tried several ways to get it &, if I remember correctly, went:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html#help
under "additional packages".  It's quite helpful but obviously not
quite enough for me. And there was an installer that took me to a
wizard. Can't tell you much because I tried so many things.

Perhaps we need a VERY BASIC newbies group!

I also tried some of the other resources folks pointed me to however
had difficulty with them also. Not sure if they may have been for
older versions or what. I'll list them & see what you think.

If we don't progress by mid July, I'll be in Austin & we can knock
heads together!!

Let me know if you figure anything out!!

Help files & help browser (was: Re: Re: Totally a newbie needs direction!)

On Win32, the easiest way is to use the installers provided by Jernej. On
all systems I have access to, help is working flawlessly...

On a side note, we (Jernej and I) yesterday succeeded to build GIMPs own
help-browser plug-in. There are still some bugs to fix - images aren't
displayed, and the cursor doesn't change over links etc. - but we now have
something to build upon.

If you don't know what the help-browser is, check the following entries in
Sven Neumanns
blog:

http://svenfoo.geekheim.de/index.php/2005-04-15/hacking-the-gimp-help-browser/
http://svenfoo.geekheim.de/index.php/2005-04-17/more-help-browser-hacking/

Another thing I'd like to mention is the following bug report:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=171200

Thanks to Torsten Streicher, we now have some clue about one of the problems
some people have with the help files on Win32 (the move fiel to problem).
This is a nice example for a good bug report - no "hit&run" reporting,
instead Torsten cares for it and provided additional information.

HTH,
Michael

Hi All,

I had the same problems with the help files.  There seemed to be no way
to install them, or to get the main program to recognise that they were
there.  Then I came on this forum and asked.  The common reply was that
they were self installing, so I knew something was wrong.  I went back
and downloaded the files again, from a different mirror site, and this
time there was an installer included with the downloaded files.  End of
my problem, but not yours.  My conclusion at the time, was that some of
the mirror sites DO NOT have the Windows installer included.  I
mentioned this at the time, but perhaps no one followed up.  Whoever it
is that is responsible for posting these files to the various mirrors
may have inadvertently posted the Linux version to some sites, I don't
really know.  But there is definitely a problem with the help files,
because this complaint keeps coming up, over and over again.  Could
someone who knows, check this out?

I didn't have any problems with the help file at all.  I just simply
downloaded the zip, unzipped the single EXE file, ran it, and bing
bang boom.  It was installed.

Are you guys getting the help files off of gimp.org (the tarballs that
need compiling) or gimp-win.sourceforge.net? (the ZIP with one
self-executable)

I'm with Adam. I had terrible time at first trying to get the help
installed. After much fussing around, trial & error, got to the gimp-
win.sourceforge.net  & all's been fine since..as far as help files
go.
Now I just have to be patient & learn the program which I'm sure will
seem easy, a year from now!
